Four wheel shaped jewels designed by Debora and Tiziana Cerrone, will be the awards to the winners of the maglia rosa, maglia azzurra, maglia ciclamino and maglia bianca.
Lanciano. “The world keeps spinning” is this event’s slogan linked to Lanciano’s stage of the Giro d’Italia. On Tuesday, October 13, at the start of the pink caravan from the city of Lanciano, the municipality will pay homage to the winners of the San Salvo to Roccaraso stage, with four jewels created by the jewelry stylists and sisters Debora
and Tiziana Cerrone.
The jewels and the event program were presented at a press conference this morning with the stylist Debora Cerrone, art director Luca Di Francescantonio, mayor of Lanciano Mario Pupillo, sport councillor Davide Caporale, and Paralympic cyclist Fabio Serraiocco, as participants.
The jewel, named Evol, is a stylized wheel-shaped pendant, a symbol of continuity, restart and hope. To face life and to be reborn especially, after the pandemic events. But not only. The artistic inspiration comes from a broader interpretation of current events. Political, economic and environmental issues merge and inspire the vision of a better future. A wheel is the tool to inevitably arrive elsewhere. A new goal to reach, which requires a minimal physical effort, and therefore involving the individual, it’s a spatial and a temporal place, a concept, a lifestyle. Therefore, the wheel becomes an amulet to build a new future. “A sort of year zero”, as the description of the jewel explains.

“The observation of all that surrounds me has always been a source of inspiration for my creations” – Debora explains – the first Evol jewel came to life during my recent stay in Canada at Vancouver, watching crowds of people riding on bicycles. This silent way to move that seems to separate humans from earth with a wonderful freedom sensation, made me think about a common symbol, a wheel, that leads to progress and change. This was my point of fusion between thoughts and art. Something that may identify those who love nature, movement, pure air, and who live in synergy with all that surrounds them”. A reconciliation that gives a new positive charge to creation, as a good omen for the hard times the world is now going through.
The art director Luca Di Francescantonio has illustrated, as in the project there is “a further significance beyond the initial inspiration of the artist”. “The wheel is an object which represents a new origin, a new way to re-start and to see the future” – explained Di Francescantonio – This is why this jewel can be seen as a kind of amulet which carried with it a sense of renewal which, along with the slogan “the world keeps on spinning”, testified to the fact that we are here and that there is another world which is waiting for us”.
The mayor Mario Pupillo and the Sports Councillor Davide Caporale expressed great satisfaction for the return, after 21 years, of the Giro d’Italia to Lanciano. “The generosity of the Cerrone family – then explained the mayor – is the excellent demonstration of a business activity which, through its gesture, will leave a mark in the history of our city. This jewelled homage to the athletes perfectly represents our way of being, the generosity is a well-known quality of Lanciano citizens. We thank everyone for their availability and the ingenuity of the Cerrone family, whom we applaud for their praiseworthy enterprise”.
The jewel will be presented next Tuesday, on the occasion of the departure of the athletes from Lanciano to Tortoreto, to the cyclists who will be awarded the maglie rosa, azzurra, ciclamino and bianca in the previous leg, that from San Salvo to Roccaraso.
Lanciano has chosen to pay homage to the presence of one of the most well-known events in the Italian sports tradition with a symbol which perfectly links past, present and future. History, represented by the craftsmanship of the Cerrone sisters, who make the artisinal excellence of the city into a reality. A tomorrow well-translated into the projectual idea of the”amulet”: new life.
“We want Evol to become an object of identification for those who have respect and love for the world that surrounds them and for humanity as a whole”, this is the dream of Debora and Tiziana Cerrone. The two jewellery designers, with the participation of Aldo Cacchione, have decided to donate a part of the proceeds of the sale of the charm to Obiettivo3, a project designed by Alex Zanardi, which aims to initiate and support new athletes of paralympic sports.
“The wheel is a symbol in which I identify a great del with” – these are the words of Fabio Serraiocco, who participated in the conference, representing Obbiettivo 3 – I am a paraolympic cyclist, and this means that, like many of my friends, we have had some accidents. For a moment, we had to slow down and stop the wheels, but in that very moment, we made a choice, namely not to conclude our trip during that leg, after that fall. We decided to release the brakes, to give the wheels a chance to turn again and to look ahead. Because life, in the end, in just like the Giro d’Italia, it doesn’t end during a leg. We must always look ahead to a new objective, towards the next leg».
